Prosecutor Smith Halts Charges Against Trump Over 2020 Election Interference
Before taking office in January, President-elect Donald Trump was confronted with two ongoing legal cases, raising questions about the potential impact on his upcoming term.
President-Elect Trump Cleared of Two Legal Charges
Donald Trump, the newly elected President of the United States, achieved a significant legal victory as two federal charges against him were dropped. These judicial decisions followed recommendations by Special Prosecutor Jack Smith.
A Sitting President, Free from Prosecution
Smith recommended halting the prosecution of Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election results. According to Federal Judge Tanya Chutkan, this recommendation is “consistent with the interpretation that immunity granted to a sitting president is temporary, expiring once he leaves office”.
Additionally, Smith also dropped charges against Trump concerning the retention of classified documents after his departure from the White House in 2021.
The Stormy Daniels Case
Despite these victories, the “Stormy Daniels” case persists. Trump has been found guilty by the New York State justice system of “felony falsification of accounts to conceal a plot to corrupt the 2016 election”. This charge relates to undisclosed payments made to the adult film actress Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet. However, Judge Juan Merchan has allowed Trump’s lawyers to file for a procedural annulment by December 2.
In summary, President-Elect Donald Trump can view these recent developments as a victory. However, some cases are still pending, and Trump’s judicial future remains uncertain.
