Qualcomm Pledges Up to 8 Years of Updates for Android Smartphones with Snapdragon Chips

Qualcomm recently announced that Android smartphones with Snapdragon chips will now receive updates for up to eight years, a significant benefit for users.
Qualcomm Extends Android Device Support to Eight Years
In a recent statement, tech giant Qualcomm announced it will extend its support for Android devices to eight years, including software and security updates. This initiative, resulting from a partnership with Google, aligns with Google’s commitment to providing extended support for its Pixel devices.
Extended Support for Snapdragon Chipsets
This policy means that Android phones equipped with Snapdragon chipsets will receive comprehensive software support, including Android updates and security patches. For instance, any device released this year will be supported until 2032.
Which Devices Are Eligible?
Qualcomm had previously announced this support duration for the Snapdragon 8 Elite, unveiled last October. The latest announcement expands this service to all new Snapdragon 8 and 7 series “mobile platforms.” “However, it is up to the device manufacturer to ensure their devices receive this software support.”
Enhancing Device Longevity and Durability
This decision makes the choice to keep a phone longer more appealing. The press release emphasizes that this move “promotes the longevity and durability of devices.” Qualcomm also claims this is the longest software support duration it has ever offered. However, it should be noted that older phones with Snapdragon chips do not appear to be eligible for this extended support in the future.
