RCS has reached a significant milestone by integrating end-to-end encryption, greatly enhancing message privacy between iOS and Android devices, with support from Apple and the GSMA.

The Future of Secure Messaging: RCS

The new messaging standard, RCS (Rich Communication Services), has taken a significant step towards secure communication with the introduction of end-to-end encryption. Announced by GSMA, the global association representing mobile operators, RCS competes with more secure yet less commercial messaging services like Signal, Threema, and Session, which were built from the ground up to ensure maximum privacy. RCS aims for widespread adoption, targeting a broader audience than the privacy-centric services like Signal and Threema.

End-to-End Encryption: A Major Advance

Just six months after RCS was embraced by iPhone with the launch of iOS 18, the GSMA’s Chief Technical Officer announced a significant update to the standard’s specifications. The end-to-end encryption (E2EE), based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, is now included. This enhancement ensures that messages and files remain secure and confidential, whether sent between iOS or Android devices.

Enhanced Security for Users

Tom Van Pelt, GSMA’s Chief Technical Officer, stated: “RCS will be the first large-scale messaging service to support interoperable E2EE across different client implementations. With other unique security features like SIM-based authentication, RCS users will enjoy the highest level of privacy and security, offering enhanced protection against scams, fraud, and other threats.”

Apple’s Support for This Initiative

In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple expressed pleasure in leading a cross-industry effort to bring end-to-end encryption to the GSMA’s universal RCS profile. The Cupertino-based company also promised to add E2EE support in iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS in “future software updates.” While no specific timetable was provided, this update will prevent third parties from intercepting and accessing potentially sensitive and private messages.

Rapid Adoption of Rich Messaging in 2024

According to Infobip, the adoption of Rich Communication Services (RCS) in France soared by 176% in 2024, reflecting a global trend towards richer, more interactive messaging services. Concurrently, the use of WhatsApp increased twelvefold in France, underscoring its growing significance in corporate communication strategies. The retail and e-commerce sector saw a thirteenfold increase in message volume, highlighting the massive adoption of messaging channels to enhance customer experience and boost sales.
