By 2025, RCS, providing more features than traditional SMS/MMS, will be accessible on most mobile devices, significantly altering how we communicate. What major changes should we expect?

A Fresh Wind Blows Through Mobile Messaging

Goodbye to the SMS/MMS that revolutionized communication in the 1990s; enter Rich Communication Services (RCS). This cutting-edge technology, soon to be on most mobile phones, will enable the sending of enhanced messages. What does this actually mean? Let’s dive in and find out.

RCS: A Necessary Modernization

Despite their ease of use and speed, SMS/MMS are now seen as outdated compared to instant messaging services like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Limited character counts and reduced image quality upon sending are among the limitations that have rendered them obsolete. RCS, developed and promoted by Google and the GSMA (Groupe Spécial Mobile Association), addresses these shortcomings.

An Enriched and Standardized Messaging Service

RCS aims to replace SMS/MMS with a standardized enhanced messaging system. More modern, it will allow for interactive messaging, multimedia streams, and file transfers in various formats, all over the internet. RCS uses data networks (Wi-Fi, 4G, 5G) for transmitting richer messages, unlike SMS, which uses traditional telephony networks.

Offering functionalities similar to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, or Signal, RCS has the advantage of being interoperable. As France Num explains, “like SMS/MMS, you don’t need a specific app to read them.” A step closer to universal messaging.

Advanced Features Accessible to All

Compared to SMS/MMS, RCS introduces numerous features: no character limits, enriched content (links, documents, photos, videos, gifs…), group conversations, read receipts, and typing indicators. Moreover, RCS also allows adding events to calendars and sharing locations. These capabilities are set to change the way we communicate.

RCS is already available and operational for some users and will soon be for others. Estimated to be compatible with about 87% of mobile phones, it operates on Android and has recently been adopted on newer iPhones. A promising universal renewal in messaging.
