Rebel Leader Vows ‘Stability’ for Syria: Mohammad al-Bachir Appointed Head of Transitional Government
Syrian rebels announced on TV that Mohammad al-Bachir will lead a provisional government until March 1, 2025, according to an official statement. What major challenges will the new leader face?
A New Leader for Syria
The Syrian political landscape has undergone a significant transformation. In a televised announcement, Syrian rebels declared that Mohammad al-Bachir will assume the role of head of a transitional government until March 1, 2025.
Until now, al-Bachir has led the “Salvation Government” in the rebel stronghold of Idlib.
Stability and Calm: A Rebel Promise
Upon his appointment, al-Bachir reassured the Syrian people, promising peace and stability, especially critical after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Abou Mohammad al-Jolani, emphasized this sentiment, stating, “People are weary of war. The country is not ready for another one.”
The Transition Under International Watch
This historic turning point is being closely monitored internationally. Antony Blinken, U.S. Secretary of State, affirmed that the United States will “recognize and fully support a future Syrian government emerging from an inclusive political process.” European diplomat Kaja Kallas spoke of “huge challenges” ahead, hoping that Syria avoids the “terrifying scenarios” of Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan.
Despite cautious optimism, tensions remain. Israel, long an adversary of Assad, declared it would not allow any hostile forces near its border. The Israeli military has conducted hundreds of strikes in various Syrian cities to prevent these areas from falling into terrorist hands.
Mohammad al-Bachir: A Leader for Stability?
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Mohammad al-Bachir stated: “It’s time for the people to enjoy stability and calm… and to know that their government is here to provide the services they need.”
As the world watches, the future of Syria remains uncertain. The upcoming transition is critical, and the actions of the new government will be pivotal for the country’s future.
