NASA has expressed concern over the faster-than-expected rise in sea levels. Which French territories are most at risk from this threatening increase?

Rising Sea Levels in 2024: A More Alarming Reality Than Anticipated

The year 2024 marked a disturbing milestone in our planet’s climate history, being the hottest year on record and witnessing an unexpectedly significant rise in sea levels. This concerning development was officially announced by NASA on March 13, 2025.

The Rise Attributed to Ocean Warming

“Last year’s increase was due to an unusual warming of the oceans, coupled with the melting of terrestrial ice such as glaciers,” NASA pointed out. The U.S. space agency, monitoring sea level changes via satellite imagery, recorded a 0.59 centimeter rise in 2024, which is 0.16 centimeters above scientific forecasts.

“Each year is slightly different, but what is clear is that the ocean continues to rise at an accelerating rate,” added Josh Willis, a NASA researcher.

Risk Areas in France

The implications of rising sea levels are significant. Based on forecasts by the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM), certain regions in metropolitan France are particularly vulnerable.

The most at-risk areas are located along the western Mediterranean coast, the southern Atlantic facade, and in the north, particularly along the English Channel and North Sea coasts.

The Role of Climate Change

Climate change is the primary culprit behind rising sea levels, driven by two main phenomena: the melting of glaciers and polar ice caps, and the thermal expansion of seawater. NASA specifies that the latter became the leading cause of sea level rise in 2024.

As 2024 set a record as the hottest year since 1850, sea levels are expected to continue rising as long as humanity keeps emitting greenhouse gases. Populations living on islands and coastal areas are at particular risk.
