Roof Collapse at Dominican Nightclub Kills 100, Including Merengue Superstar Rubby Pérez

A roof collapse at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic tragically claimed 100 lives, including that of rising merengue star Rubby Pérez.
A National Tragedy
The Dominican Republic endured a night of terror and despair. The Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, a popular entertainment venue, became the scene of one of the country’s most horrific incidents.
The roof of the establishment tragically collapsed, resulting in the deaths of approximately one hundred people and injuring over 150 others.
Collapse During a Concert
The disaster struck in the middle of a concert, featuring merengue artist Rubby Pérez on stage. Videos shared on social media captured the moment the building was plunged into darkness as the structure fell onto the audience.
“The structure collapses on those present,” the videos report. Authorities deployed 370 rescuers and 150 ambulances to the site of the tragedy. The president declared three days of national mourning.
Notable Personalities Among the Victims
The calamity also claimed the lives of prominent Dominican figures. Rubby Pérez, the beloved merengue singer who had entertained the Caribbean and the world for over 40 years, perished in the collapse. Numerous Latin American celebrities paid tribute to “the highest voice of merengue.”
Besides Rubby Pérez, other notable victims included two Dominican baseball stars and the governor of Monte Cristi province, Nelsy Cruz. Crowds gathered around the nightclub, as well as outside hospitals and the morgue, hoping for news about their loved ones.
A Nation in Mourning
This catastrophe sadly joins the list of the worst in the country’s history, coming just two years after the San Cristobal explosion that killed 38 people. In 2005, a prison fire in Higuey claimed 136 lives. Today, the nation grieves and struggles to cope with this tragedy.
