Living with Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, he held the record for the longest survival with the condition. What secrets lay behind his remarkable resilience to this disease?

A Brave Battle Against Progeria

On Sunday, October 6, 2024, the world paid tribute to Sammy Basso, who passed away from progeria at the age of 28. Known for his fight against this rare condition, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, he was the oldest living person with the disease.

Exceeding Life Expectations

Progeria is a rare genetic disease that causes premature aging. Typically, life expectancy at birth is around 13 years, a benchmark that Sammy greatly surpassed. His death occurred after he suddenly fell ill during a dinner with friends.

A Symbol of Courage and Hope

Sammy Basso was praised by many public figures for his courage and faith in facing the disease. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said, “Sammy Basso was an extraordinary example of courage, faith, and a positive spirit. His dedication to progeria research and his ability to inspire others will forever be a beacon of light.”

Actively Engaged in Research

Born in northern Italy, Sammy Basso pursued his university studies in molecular biology at Padua in 2021.

He notably authored a thesis aiming to elucidate the relationship between inflammation and progeria. In addition to his scientific contributions, Sammy was very active on social media, attracting over 70,000 followers on Instagram.
