A New Era for Samsung: One UI to Replace Tizen
South Korean electronics titan Samsung has announced plans to switch the current interface on its smart TVs from Tizen to One UI, familiar to its smartphone users. This change will also extend to certain Samsung home appliances.
One UI Rollout Set for 2025
The new interface is set to debut on TVs in 2025, with the exact launch date yet to be announced. The extension of this update to the 2024 Samsung TV models remains uncertain. The announcement was made at Samsung’s annual developer conference, SDC 2024, where One UI was featured prominently.
One UI: Unification and Longevity
Originally implemented in top-tier Samsung phones and watches like the Samsung Galaxy S10, One UI is an Android-based user interface. Samsung’s aim is to standardize the look of its interfaces across all devices, making its smart TVs more similar to its smartphones. Additionally, Samsung commits to “providing software updates for up to seven years” with One UI.
AI Integration and Uncertain Future for Tizen
Tizen, a popular open-source interface used on nearly 270 million smart TVs globally, offers free content, app support, and additional features. The impact of the switch to One UI on these features is not yet clarified. However, Samsung plans to enhance AI features widely, including the new Samsung AI Cast feature, which allows Samsung Galaxy smartphone users to create AI-generated photos and use them as screensavers on their TVs.
