A service provider has introduced a pricing model that lowers customer bills based on how long screens are used. The initiative aims to encourage responsible usage by directly linking screen time to the cost of the service for users.

Tl;dr

  • TeleCoop offers a pay-as-you-use mobile plan.
  • Focus on digital sobriety and financial transparency.
  • Targets users seeking ethical, eco-friendly telecom choices.
  • An Unconventional Player in Telecoms

While the relentless climb in mobile plan prices has left many consumers frustrated, a new contender is charting its own course. This autumn, the telecoms cooperative TeleCoop is introducing a distinctive approach: a mobile plan where monthly bills adjust automatically based on real data consumption. This initiative by the Société coopérative d’intérêt collectif (SCIC) isn’t just about keeping costs down; it’s a bold attempt to encourage what they call digital sobriety, all the while ensuring transparent and equitable billing for users.

The Principle: You Pay for What You Use

The concept at the heart of this offer could hardly be simpler. In the words of the operator: « Moins tu consommes de datas, moins tu payes ! ». The price structure is intentionally straightforward: €20 covers up to 80 GB per month; dial usage back to under 20 GB and your bill drops to €18; keep it below 10 GB and you’ll pay €16; use less than 5 GB and the cost sinks to just €14. Each month, actual usage determines which tier applies—no negotiation or manual adjustment required. After an initial month at full price, customers who trim their internet habits—perhaps by stepping away from video games or social media—are rewarded with immediate savings.

A Commitment to Ethics and Community

But there’s more to TeleCoop than flexible pricing. According to co-founder Marion Graeffly, ethics are central: « redonner du pouvoir d’achat tout en agissant pour la santé mentale et la planète ». The company operates with a governance model involving over 1,800 members, provides direct customer support from France, and aims to foster both mental health and environmental stewardship. Having attracted more than 11,000 clients since its founding in 2020—and now with a staff of just twelve—the cooperative recorded €1.7 million in revenue last year.

    Sobriety or Price War?

There is, admittedly, a catch. From a strictly financial standpoint, rivals like Free offer plans boasting much larger data allowances for similar—or even lower—prices (€20 for 350 GB at Free versus 80 GB at TeleCoop). Yet, as any observer might note, not everyone shops on price alone. The target audience here includes those keen on aligning their tech habits with their values—much as buyers of the ethical smartphone Fairphone. Among the guiding principles that set this cooperative apart:

    • Rewarding digital sobriety
    • Financial transparency at every level
    • A smaller ecological footprint

In sum, while it doesn’t seek to upend technology itself—the service remains limited to 4G via Orange’s network—TeleCoop quietly reimagines our relationship with our phones: making each gigabyte count both for our wallets and our collective well-being.
