The latest version of Siri, expected to revolutionize Apple’s voice assistant, has been put on hold due to reliability issues, forcing the company to rethink its strategy and weakening its competitive edge.

An Embarrassing Delay for Apple

Apple’s official announcement of a delay in the major generative AI update for its personal assistant Siri has cast a shadow over the company’s reputation. Following last month’s rumors, this revelation suggests that the enhanced Siri demo at last year’s WWDC was merely a conceptual video.

Reliability Issues Stall Siri 2.0

A detailed report from an internal Apple meeting released by Bloomberg indicates that Siri 2.0 only functions as intended between two-thirds and 80% of the time. Senior Director Robby Walker described the situation as “disheartening,” making the update’s postponement inevitable. “If you were using these features in the current version, you’d probably ask: are they ready? How would I feel delivering them to our customers? Is this the right choice?” he stated.

Siri 2.0: Untapped Potential

Despite these setbacks, Siri 2.0 boasts promising features that greatly surpass the current version. The report highlights the AI’s ability to retrieve a user’s driver’s license number on command and locate specific photos of a child. Siri could also precisely manipulate apps through voice commands, successfully integrating content into an email, adding recipients, and making other modifications.

The Uncertain Future of Siri 2.0

Expectations were that the new Siri version would be postponed to iOS 19 and launched with the iPhone 17. However, even this may be overly optimistic. Robby Walker noted that while this is the goal, it doesn’t necessarily mean the update will launch at that time. “Other commitments across Apple for different projects” might take priority. Despite these challenges, Walker concluded the meeting by expressing his belief that Apple will “deliver the most efficient virtual assistant in the world.” Yet, with Google Assistant’s withdrawal for Gemini and Amazon’s introduction of Alexa Plus, Apple cannot afford another misstep with Siri 2.0.
