Sluggish Demand: iPhone 16 Sales Worry Analysts

The latest sales data for the iPhone 16 is disappointing, with an analyst describing the demand as 'lackluster'.
Declining Sales for Basic iPhone 16 Models
Current data suggest that sales for the less expensive iPhone 16 models are underwhelming, with official figures to be released by Apple during their quarterly results announcement on October 31.
Ming-Chi Kuo: A Trusted Analyst
Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed on social network X that production levels for the four new iPhone models are similar. However, demand for the basic iPhone 16 model is declining, indicating a preference for the two iPhone 16 Pro models.
iPhone Production in China
iPhone production primarily occurs in China, and Ming-Chi Kuo is well-informed about Apple’s supply chain partners. According to Kuo, Apple has instructed its suppliers to continue production of the two Pro models during China’s National Day holiday week, suggesting these models meet Apple’s expectations. Kuo stated, “Demand for the basic iPhone 16 and 16 Plus remains lackluster compared to last year,”
Production Forecasts
Kuo predicts Apple will produce 88 to 89 million iPhone 16 units in the last quarter of the year, aligning with previous forecasts and slightly less than the 90 to 91 million iPhone 15 units produced in the same period last year. He also noted shorter shipping times for the iPhone 16 Pro compared to last year’s model, despite stable demand, suggesting more efficient stock availability by Apple this time around.
Kuo mentioned that Apple is gearing up for a potential increase in U.S. sales with the upcoming iOS 18.1 update featuring Apple Intelligence later this month. “The next focus will be the impact on U.S. market demand/shipments after Apple Intelligence becomes available at the end of October,” said Kuo.
While Kuo has a solid track record on Apple forecasts, it’s important to note these figures are estimates; only Apple knows the actual sales performance of the iPhone 16. For now, the company is highlighting positive word-of-mouth about the phones and anticipation for the launch of Apple Intelligence this month.
