Spotify Defends Its Artist Payment Rates

Spotify, the music streaming giant, has come under scrutiny for its artist compensation practices. Its 2024 “Loud & Clear” annual report claims that it has paid out $10 billion to artists since inception, including $60 million in 2024 alone.

Impressive Numbers Amidst Controversy

The 2024 Spotify report reveals significant figures: the 100,000th most-listened-to artist’s earnings have increased tenfold over a decade, from $600 to $6,000. The 10,000th most-listened-to artist reportedly earned $131,000, up from $34,000. Moreover, nearly 1,500 artists have earned over a million dollars.

Despite these numbers, Spotify’s reputation among artists remains tarnished. A study by Duetti, a music catalog buyer, indicates that Spotify paid $3 per 1,000 streams in 2024. In comparison, the same number of streams earned artists $4.80 on YouTube, $6.20 on Apple Music, and $8.80 on Amazon Music. Following this report, Spotify told TechCrunch that these “allegations are ridiculous and unfounded”, emphasizing that music platforms do not pay per stream.

Artists Boycott Spotify

In January, Billboard reported that four out of the five Grammy nominees for Songwriter of the Year chose to skip Spotify’s event, citing the company’s decision to bundle audiobooks and songs in subscriptions.

Previously, Billboard had reported that these new premium, duo, and family subscriptions led to a decrease in songwriters’ earnings, with an estimated loss of about $150 million in mechanical royalties in the U.S. over the first twelve months.
