Spotify, with its rapid growth and AI-focused strategy, leads the music streaming industry. However, it faces challenges related to artist compensation and sound quality.

A Golden Year for Spotify

Spotify has had a year to remember, according to a report by Variety. The company saw a dramatic increase in its user base, adding 11 million users in the final quarter of 2024 despite criticisms over artist remuneration and concerns about “ghost music” on its platform. The user count surged; active monthly users during the fourth quarter rose by 12% to 675 million, while premium subscriptions reached 263 million.

It’s unclear if the AI Playlist, which enhances the Premium model by offering an immersive and distinctive experience across various countries, contributed to this uptick. Spotify is positioning itself against Apple Music and YouTube Music by leveraging AI to enhance music discovery. This technology also boosts artist visibility, enhancing fan interactions.

An Ambitious Vision for 2025

Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify, is particularly excited about leading the company through this prosperous period. He emphatically states that Spotify will “double down on music in 2025.” What does this statement really mean? Though Spotify utilizes AI in its usage model, numerous players like United Masters, a label for artists, are transforming the industry. This AI-based platform is shaking up the landscape by creating a more balanced tripartite market, thus enabling sustainable monetization for all music industry stakeholders.

Sound Quality Awaiting Improvement

The persistent rumor of a Spotify HiFi offering, a high-quality streaming service comparable to those on Tidal or Apple Music, continues. While these services offer CD-quality or superior audio, Spotify still provides lower-quality MP3 streaming, which is less data-intensive but less satisfying for the ears.

A Return to Musical Roots

In recent years, Spotify has focused more on podcasts and audiobooks rather than music. The intention to “double down” may indicate a renewed focus on placing music at the core of its offerings. Hopefully, this will also lead to improved streaming quality. After all, even with a library of over 100 million tracks, it’s unlikely that this number can be doubled.
