Stop Apple Servers from Covertly Receiving Your Photo Data

Learn how to disable Apple's new photo feature, which uploads your data to its servers, to protect your privacy and safeguard your personal information.
Apple’s Visual Search Feature: A Privacy Dilemma
In a world dominated by technology and innovation, Apple is pushing boundaries with its enhanced visual search capability in the Photos app, which, however, raises privacy concerns.
What is Enhanced Visual Search?
Launched in iOS 18 and macOS 15 updates, this feature uses artificial intelligence to detect items in photos. For instance, capturing the Eiffel Tower prompts Apple’s AI to create a mathematical blueprint, or “vector embedding”, of the image.
This blueprint is then encrypted and sent to Apple’s servers to check for matches, alongside dummy queries to preserve the anonymity of the legitimate request.
Privacy Concerns
Developer Jeff Johnson has highlighted worries about this feature. In a recent blog post, he criticizes the function as a privacy breach, accusing Apple of implementing it quietly without explicit consent.
He states on his blog: “I did not ask for my device experiences to be ‘enhanced’ by reaching out to Cupertino… If it’s happening entirely on my computer, then it’s private. But if my computer sends data back to its manufacturer, then it’s not private, or at least not completely private.” While Apple claims that the feature is privacy-conscious, the lack of transparency remains a concern as many users updated their devices unaware of this new capability.
How to Disable Enhanced Visual Search?
For those concerned about privacy, disabling the feature is straightforward in the device settings. Navigate to Settings > Apps > Photos, where you’ll find the option to turn off enhanced visual search at the bottom.
Since this feature is enabled by default, it might be wise to inform privacy-conscious friends and family about it. Meanwhile, we can only hope that Apple will soon address these privacy concerns.
