In the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things, the character Vecna is set to face defeat without the support of his usual minions. This pivotal development signals a dramatic shift in the dynamics of the popular Netflix series.

TL;DR

  • Final battle lacked iconic monsters and tension.
  • Writers debated including Demogorgons, fearing audience fatigue.
  • Creators’ explanation for absence remains unconvincing to fans.

A Divisive Conclusion for Stranger Things

As the dust settles after the highly anticipated finale of Stranger Things, debate continues to rage among its fanbase. The last episode, which many expected to deliver a high-stakes confrontation, has instead provoked widespread disappointment over what some describe as an unexpectedly subdued climax. The absence of familiar threats—most notably the fearsome Demogorgons—in the pivotal location dubbed “The Abyss” has particularly stirred controversy.

The Battle That Left Fans Wanting More

Throughout previous seasons, the omnipresent danger posed by monstrous entities like the Demogorgons helped define the series’ suspenseful identity. Yet, in this concluding chapter, viewers witnessed a swift resolution as heroes dispatched their adversaries—Vecna and the infamous Mind Flayer—with minimal resistance. Many longtime followers lamented that this lack of escalating peril sapped the finale of much-needed intensity. Several even noted that, compared to earlier seasons, the sense of genuine risk seemed conspicuously absent.

Crewroom Doubts and “Demo-Fatigue” Concerns

Behind closed doors, it turns out these concerns were shared—and debated—by members of the writing team. Insights from “One Last Adventure,” a Netflix documentary chronicling production, reveal that scriptwriter Paul Dichter, who penned episode four of the final season, advocated for at least one creature’s inclusion in The Abyss. Dichter reportedly pressed: “There have to be monsters in The Abyss. A demogorgon, a bat, a dog… It’s madness if there’s nothing.”

However, not all showrunners agreed on this direction. While co-creator Matt Duffer initially supported reviving classic monsters, his brother Ross Duffer and fellow writer Kate Trefry raised concerns about potential viewer fatigue—a phenomenon they referred to as “demo-fatigue.” After extensive deliberations without consensus, a decision was ultimately reached to leave these creatures on the sidelines during the final showdown.

Several factors explain this decision:

  • The heavy reliance on Demogorgons throughout earlier seasons;
  • The inconsistency perceived in their strength or weaknesses over time.

An Explanation That Fails to Satisfy

When questioned by media outlet The Wrap, the Duffer brothers maintained that leaving out these iconic monsters made strategic sense within their narrative universe; with the formidable Mind Flayer at Vecna’s disposal, summoning lesser creatures was deemed unnecessary. While they clarified that Demogorgons remained present somewhere within The Abyss—albeit off-screen—this rationale hasn’t convinced many loyal fans still seeking greater payoff from such a pivotal moment.

For those wishing to revisit every twist and turn—or explore behind-the-scenes debates—the entire series and its companion documentary remain available on Netflix.
