Recent studies suggest that swearing may have a measurable impact on human physical strength. Researchers are exploring the surprising connection between the use of strong language and enhanced performance in physical tasks, offering intriguing insights into mind-body interactions.

TL;DR

  • Cursing during exercise improves endurance and enjoyment.
  • Participants feel more positive and humorous when swearing.
  • No clear link yet to reduced inhibitions.

The Surprising Power of Swearing in Sports Performance

Hushed voices and muttered curses are no strangers to the gym, but recent research sheds new light on this common phenomenon. Could the odd expletive actually help athletes push further? A study led by Richard Stephens from Keele University, in partnership with colleagues from the University of Alabama, delves into whether a bit of strong language could act as an unexpected ally for physical performance.

An Innovative Experimental Approach

To unravel this question, researchers recruited over 180 healthy volunteers, aged between 18 and 65. Each participant selected both a preferred swear word—perhaps the kind that might slip out after a stubbed toe—and a neutral term, like “table.” Tasked with performing a challenging “chair push-up”—lifting their bodyweight while gripping the edges of a chair—they would repeat either the swear word or neutral word, depending on random assignment.

The scientists set out not only to measure endurance but also to probe psychological factors immediately after exertion. Participants reported on their sense of freedom (or “disinhibition”), humor experienced during the task, their level of distraction, and even self-confidence.

Revealing Results—With a Few Caveats

What did the data reveal? Quite strikingly, uttering a choice expletive during strenuous effort resulted in improved endurance: individuals managed to hold the pose longer than when using neutral language. Notably, those who swore also reported enhanced feelings of positivity and found more humor in their experience—a finding that suggests colorful language may add an unexpected layer of enjoyment to demanding workouts.

Several factors explain this benefit:

  • Physical performance improved: Endurance times increased with swearing.
  • Mood boosted: Participants felt more positive and amused.

However, some expectations remain unmet. The anticipated connection between swearing and a reduction in inhibitions wasn’t conclusively demonstrated—meaning we still can’t say for sure why people sometimes feel suddenly empowered after cursing mid-rep.

A Free and Ubiquitous Tool—But Questions Remain

Stephens, whose previous work linked strong language to pain relief, notes that “swearing is literally a free resource” available to anyone seeking to break through barriers in training. While these findings—published in American Psychologist—may spark intrigue among both amateur athletes and professionals, further study is needed before all mysteries behind this psychological boost are solved. For now, it seems our most spontaneous expressions could be fueling us more than we ever realized.
