Sweden and Finland Actively Prepare for Potential War with Russia
Aware of their proximity to Russia, the two Scandinavian countries are already anticipating Ukraine's challenges by mid-November 2024. What steps are they considering to prepare?
Anticipation of a Potential Conflict
Amid rising uncertainties in mid-November 2024, Sweden and Finland, neighboring Scandinavian countries to Russia, are taking proactive steps. Due to the delicate situation in Ukraine, these nations are gearing up for the possibility of an armed conflict.
War Preparation: The Swedish Initiative
On Monday, Sweden began distributing five million brochures to its citizens, advising them on how to prepare for a potential conflict. The pamphlet, titled “Om krisen eller kriget kommer” (“If Crisis or War Comes”), is an initiative by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). It provides practical advice on crisis management, covering wars, natural disasters, and cyberattacks.
Key points in the 32-page, simply illustrated brochure include locating fallout shelters, choosing suitable food supplies, and identifying reliable information sources. This brochure has been issued five times since World War II, with the previous edition circulated in 2018 making headlines as it was the first such distribution since 1961, during the height of the Cold War.
Alarming Statements from Swedish Officials
Swedish officials have voiced their concerns. Mikael Frisell, director of MSB, stated in a press release: “The security situation is severe, and we all need to strengthen our resilience to be able to cope with crises and, ultimately, war”.
Additionally, former Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, Micael Bydén, has urged Swedes to “mentally prepare for war”.
Finland Follows Suit
Finland, another Russian neighbor, is not far behind. The Finnish government has set up a website offering similar advice to prepare its citizens for a potential crisis. Both countries have a history of military non-alignment, but joined NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
