Can Nintendo remain competitive with the introduction of the Switch 2, Steam Deck, and other portable gaming consoles currently available in the market?

The Changing Landscape of Handheld Gaming

In 2017, the Nintendo Switch emerged as a groundbreaking hybrid console. However, it’s no longer my favorite handheld. PC gaming giants have capitalized on the gamers’ hunger for this new format, launching their own enhanced versions.

These days, I find myself gravitating more towards my Steam Deck than my Switch, which now gathers dust in its dock. The ability to access my Steam library on the go, often with better resolutions and refresh rates than the Switch can offer, is a clear advantage. Coupled with a dwindling array of Nintendo titles, it’s easy to see why my Switch is being neglected.

A New Context for Switch 2

The upcoming Switch 2 will enter a dramatically different market. Launched in 2022, the Steam Deck initiated a surge of portable gaming PCs. Its Linux-based SteamOS not only mirrored Switch’s key feature but made portability more seamless, bridging desktop and mobile gaming effortlessly.

And it’s not alone in the market. Other competitors, like the Asus ROG Ally and its more powerful sibling, the ROG Ally X, challenge Steam for supremacy. Not to mention the MSI Claw 8+ AI powered by Intel’s new “Lunar Lake” processor, the Acer Nitro Blaze 7, and the Lenovo Legion Go with its detachable controllers akin to the Switch’s.

Series of Innovations

CES 2025 showcased a year teeming with innovations for handheld consoles, reminiscent of the days I spent gaming on my Game Boy SP or PSP. Lenovo introduced its smaller, more user-friendly Legion Go S, equipped with a new AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor.

However, the most significant shake-up isn’t hardware-based: Valve announced that its popular SteamOS, the gold standard for handheld PC gaming interfaces, will be available on third-party handheld consoles starting in April.

An Uncertain Future for Switch 2?

If I paint a bleak picture of the future for Switch 2, it’s because technical specs tell only part of the story. In reality, Nintendo is far from outpaced. Indeed, Switch sales far outstrip those of the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, and all other portable gaming PCs combined, with 150 million units sold.

The fact is, Nintendo has carved out its own niche, one that portable gaming PCs have yet to breach despite their technological strides. If the Switch 2 lives up to its predecessors, it will continue to be the go-to console for families and children, who generally care more about the games available than about refresh rates and performance.
