Telus Unveils Plans for Nvidia-Powered Sovereign AI Plant

Telus has unveiled ambitious plans for a sovereign artificial intelligence factory powered by Nvidia technology.
Canada’s Ambitious Project: Deploying Nvidia Supercomputers
Telus, a Canadian operator, recently announced a major initiative to deploy Nvidia supercomputers, based on Hopper and Blackwell architectures, in two sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) plants. This move could position Canada at the forefront of technological innovation.
Telus Becomes North America’s First Official Nvidia Cloud Partner
By becoming the first official Nvidia Cloud partner in North America, Telus aims to boost the national technology strategy. The AI plants, located in Quebec and British Columbia, are set to be a key driver of this strategy.
The decision to place these facilities on opposite sides of the country stems from a commitment to ensure “equitable access to advanced computing resources”, the operator explained.
Canada’s Unique Sovereign AI Plants
Telus CEO, Darren Entwistle, proudly stated: “Our sovereign AI plants are the first of their kind in Canada”. These facilities will be housed within Telus’s state-of-the-art data centers in both provinces, ensuring that “every piece of data, every computation, and every breakthrough will originate and stay within our borders”.
Economic and Ecological Benefits
Telus believes the AI plants will benefit the Canadian economy as much as its data centers did a decade ago, providing new opportunities in a booming tech-linked economy.
The operator also plans for the plants to operate ecologically, sourcing 99% of their energy from renewable sources and using a natural water cooling system, which could cut energy use by 75% compared to traditional data center systems.
“This will not only make Canada more competitive and future-ready, but it will also accelerate innovations in key areas” including health, agriculture, and sustainability, added Telus’s CEO.
