The Talisman Movie Adaptation Not Coming to Netflix

Another adaptation of Le Talisman is underway, but this project will not be joining Netflix’s growing catalogue. As interest in literary adaptations remains high, the streaming giant finds itself sidelined from this latest development.
TL;DR
- Netflix cancels adaptation of Le Talisman.
- Decades of failed film and TV attempts persist.
- A third novel remains a possibility, says Stephen King.
End of the Road for Netflix’s Le Talisman
The much-anticipated adaptation of Le Talisman, co-written by horror icons Stephen King and Peter Straub, will not be coming to screens after all—at least, not via Netflix. Despite the creative backing of the acclaimed Duffer Brothers, best known for their work on Stranger Things, the streaming giant has decided to discontinue development. The announcement, delivered almost in passing during an interview with CBR, has left fans who had hoped for a screen version of this cult classic more than a little disillusioned.
A Troubled History of Adaptations
It would be an understatement to call the journey toward adapting Le Talisman “complicated.” The novel’s history in Hollywood is littered with false starts and dashed hopes. Back in the 1980s, none other than Steven Spielberg demonstrated such enthusiasm for the story that he convinced Universal Pictures to secure the rights indefinitely. Although he once considered directing it himself, Spielberg ultimately stepped back into a producer role. Attempts resurfaced years later: television channel TNT weighed making it into a mini-series but walked away over budget concerns. Fast forward to 2019, and a new team—director Mike Barker (The Handmaid’s Tale) and screenwriter Chris Sparling (Buried)—was briefly attached before plans fizzled yet again.
A Tale Set Between Worlds—and Genres
What keeps drawing filmmakers to this particular story? At its heart, Le Talisman follows young Jack Sawyer as he braves perilous parallel worlds—the so-called “Territories”—on a quest to save his dying mother by finding a mystical talisman. Its intricate world-building and crossover ties to King’s famed saga, The Dark Tower, give it enduring appeal among devoted readers. In fact, some fans argue these subtle connections are a unique asset that makes any adaptation especially tantalizing.
A Flicker of Hope for Fans?
While Hollywood adaptations have repeatedly fallen through, there remains one thread for enthusiasts to cling to: According to recent hints from Stephen King, work is underway on a potential third volume in the series. The death of co-author Peter Straub in 2022 casts doubt on this project’s future; nevertheless, King says he may pursue it if he can recapture their collaborative voice—a task easier said than done. For now, while screens remain blank, the magic of Jack Sawyer’s universe continues to live on in print.
