TikTok Advises U.S. Android Users to Sideload App

TikTok is prompting Android users in the U.S. to manually install the app to bypass any potential restrictions.
TikTok Returns to the US: A Temporary Fix
Despite being unavailable on the Play Store, TikTok can now be downloaded and installed on Android in the United States. This update was announced through TikTok Policy’s Twitter account, noting that Android package kits are accessible on its official website. This is an unusual move for tech companies, but TikTok is an exception.
US Legislative Context
On January 19, TikTok briefly vanished following the enactment of a US law. The law mandates that if ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, does not sell the app to a US-based owner, downloading platforms like Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store must remove the app. Non-compliance would result in a $5,000 fine per US user who downloaded the app. However, “TikTok restored access to its service in less than a day”, although it has not returned to Google and Apple’s stores in the US.
75-Day Reprieve for ByteDance
An executive order signed by Donald Trump during his presidency has paused this law, providing ByteDance a deadline until April to finalize a sale. Vice President J.D. Vance has been appointed to negotiate a potential sale by the deadline. Although ByteDance has repeatedly stated in the past that it does not intend to sell the social media app, one of its major investors recently suggested that a sale would be in “everyone’s interest”. Several companies and individuals, including Perplexity AI and MrBeast, have shown interest in purchasing TikTok in the US.
