TikTok has resumed operations in the United States after a ban, thanks to assurances from the U.S. government, although national security concerns and a potential agreement continue to dominate discussions.

Key Insights on TikTok’s U.S. Comeback

On Sunday, TikTok announced it is “restoring its services” following a ban earlier in the day in the U.S. The company stated, “In collaboration with our service providers, TikTok is reinstating its services. We are grateful to President Trump for providing the clarity and assurance that our service providers will not face penalties for serving over 170 million Americans and aiding the growth of over 7 million small businesses.”

TikTok’s Renewed Momentum

A temporary halt occurred from late Saturday night to early Sunday. Last spring, Congress overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan measure giving TikTok 270 days to sever ties with its Chinese parent company ByteDance, failing which it would face a U.S. ban. Instead of facilitating a sale, TikTok opted for a legal challenge based on the First Amendment, which was ultimately rejected by the Supreme Court on Friday.

National Security Concerns at the Forefront

The unanimous decision by the country’s highest court highlighted legitimate national security concerns about the “potential for user data collection or content manipulation by the Chinese government.” By Sunday morning, the app was unavailable in stores operated by Apple, Google, and Samsung.

Potential for Operational Resurgence

In a Truth Social post on Sunday morning, Trump urged companies to “keep TikTok out of the dark!” He announced he would issue an executive order on Monday, his first day in office, “to extend the time period before the bans under the law take effect, in order to finalize a deal to safeguard our national security.”

The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped TikTok from sinking prior to his decree. Trump is aiming for the “U.S. to hold a 50% ownership stake in a joint venture.”
