Tor Project Releases Tor Browser 14.0: Everything You Need to Know

The Tor Project has released Tor Browser 14.0. Here's what you need to know about the latest update.
Tor Project Launches Tor Browser 14.0
On October 22, 2024, the Tor Project unveiled version 14.0 of its renowned browser, the exclusive gateway to the encrypted Onion network. Designed to ensure online anonymity, this browser significantly hampers the tracking of user Internet activity, thereby offering enhanced protection against surveillance.
A Secure Browser Meeting Current Standards
The latest version is built on Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) 128. The Tor Project conducted its annual ESR transition audit, thoroughly examining Firefox updates for potential impacts on user privacy and security. The comprehensive audit report is available at the tor-browser-spec repository.
Tor Browser 14.0 also boasts a new typography, borrowed from Firefox, to align with current trends and styles. Improved font weights and line heights aim to enhance font compatibility and accessibility.
Technical and Ergonomic Enhancements
Despite numerous technical challenges, developers have successfully enhanced the compatibility and usability of Tor’s fingerprinting protections. New features such as picture-in-picture, screenshot capabilities, and more have been enabled without compromising the effectiveness of these protections.
The Android version of Tor Browser now includes a highly anticipated feature: the ability to request a “new identity” directly from the app interface, a functionality previously only accessible via a persistent notification and not as comprehensive as on the desktop version.
Extended Support for Older Platforms
Users of Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, as well as macOS 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14, can celebrate: Tor Browser 14.0 will continue to receive updates on these platforms until at least March 2025. However, upgrading their operating systems is highly recommended to fully benefit from the security and privacy enhancements in Tor Browser 14.0.
