Donald Trump has extended the deadline again for the TikTok case, a decision that keeps the app's future uncertain.

The Continuing Uncertainty of TikTok’s Future in the U.S.

The TikTok saga in the U.S., driven by President Donald Trump, has taken another twist as he once again extended the deadline for Chinese company ByteDance. The firm now has an additional 75 days to divest its American operations or face a ban. This extension, announced on Friday, April 4 via President’s Truth Social platform, marks the second such postponement.

A Complex Case Requiring More Time

Trump justified the extension by stating that the deal with TikTok “requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are secured.” This executive order pushes the deadline to mid-June, following an initial extension to April 5.

A story dating back to his first day in office

After briefly pausing the platform in January, Trump had already delayed a proposed 75-day ban by signing the first executive order on his first day as president. The initial ultimatum for ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations was January 19, before Trump extended it. In April 2024, former U.S. President Joe Biden signed legislation forcing ByteDance to sell its U.S. assets due to national security concerns.

Trade Tensions as a Backdrop

On Wednesday, April 2, Trump announced a series of tariffs affecting about 90 countries, including a 34% customs duty on China, adding to the existing 20% tariffs on imports.

On Truth Social, he stated: “We hope to continue working in good faith with China, which, I understand, is not very happy with our reciprocal tariffs (necessary for fair and balanced trade between China and the U.S.!). This proves that tariffs are the most powerful economic tool, and very important for our national security.”

Trump also expressed on the platform his desire to “continue working with TikTok and China to conclude the deal.”

Multiple Interests in Acquiring TikTok

The Washington Post reported that the Trump administration had reached a deal with ByteDance on a sale project on April 2, but the Chinese government said it would not give its approval without first discussing tariffs and the president’s trade policy.

Several entities have shown interest in acquiring TikTok, the latest being Amazon, which has about 170 million users in the U.S. Thus, the future of this popular platform remains in suspense.
