You can try ChatGPT Advanced Voice for free, but there's a catch.

OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice

OpenAI, a global leader in artificial intelligence, now offers free users of its ChatGPT service a sneak peek of its new, impressive mode: Advanced Voice. This limited demonstration, announced at the company’s Dev Day event in San Francisco, allows non-subscribers to experience how it differs from the basic voice.

What Sets Advanced Voice Apart?

Advanced Voice stands out due to its native speech-to-speech technology, which is different from the free version or even Google’s new Gemini Live. Instead of converting your spoken words into text, analyzing that text, and then converting it back to speech, it directly processes spoken input, understanding the nuances of your tone or emotional expressions.

It is conceivable that OpenAI may eventually roll out Advanced Voice more broadly to all users as it continues to refine the underlying models and reduce costs.

The Impact of Advanced Voice

Starting this week, Advanced Voice is being deployed to all users of ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu, and Team globally. Free users will also get a preview of Advanced Voice.

Describing why Advanced Voice is superior to Gemini Live or Meta’s new AI voice is challenging until you’ve actually used it. For instance, when I introduced Advanced Voice to my three-year-old son by saying, “Hey ChatGPT, this is my son, he’s three years old and his name is Theodore”, the voice immediately adjusted to a tone suitable for talking to a young child and could distinguish between when it was my son or I speaking.

Untapped Potential

We have only glimpsed the potential capabilities of native speech-to-speech due to security concerns and safeguards placed on the underlying model. Occasionally, snippets of its true potential emerge when it starts beatboxing or singing. As OpenAI finds ways to address security issues, we will begin to see more of these capabilities unfold.

In summary, if you have a free version of ChatGPT and get a glimpse of Advanced Voice, don’t hesitate to try it out. Like the Apple Watch, you won’t know how good or useful it is until you’ve actually experienced it.
