The Turkish state agency Anadolu reports that 33 people have died and 48 are hospitalized due to methanol-laced alcohol consumption. It remains to be seen what actions will be taken to prevent future occurrences.

A Toxic Tragedy in Istanbul

A harrowing event has shaken Istanbul, Turkey’s bustling metropolis, where 33 individuals have tragically died and another 48 are in intensive care after consuming tainted alcohol. This alarming incident was reported by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu agency on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Deadly Alcohol

The lethal alcohol was contaminated with methanol, an industrial solvent harmful to human health and distinctly different from ethanol, which is typically found in alcoholic beverages. Initial investigations suggest this toxic substitute as the likely cause of the fatalities.

Ongoing Arrests

In response to the catastrophe, authorities swiftly acted. “Four suspects believed to have sold the tainted alcohol have been arrested on charges of ‘voluntary manslaughter,’” stated the Istanbul Governorate in an official release.

Government Under Scrutiny

Meanwhile, the government faces mounting criticism. Specialty store owners claim it indirectly contributed to the death toll due to exorbitant alcohol taxes, which they argue encourage underground production and consumption of counterfeit products.

This tragedy is not isolated. Previously, in 2024, 48 individuals in Istanbul succumbed to poisoned alcohol, according to records from the governorate.
