Typhoon Krathon Hits Taiwan
On Thursday, October 3, 2024, Taiwan was struck by Typhoon Krathon, causing significant flooding and extensive damage. “Krathon is moving very slowly,” warned Cheng Chia-ping, director of the Central Weather Administration (CWA), highlighting the severity of the situation.
Disastrous Consequences

Prime Minister Cho Jung-tai has urged vigilance, particularly in the southern and eastern regions affected by ongoing rains. “Increased vigilance is necessary,” he stated.

Precautionary Measures
In response to the threat, authorities have closed offices and schools, and distributed sandbags to help divert water. All domestic flights have been canceled and 250 international flights suspended. Airport staff have reinforced entryways in anticipation of the typhoon.
Climate Change to Blame
Typhoons are common in the region at this time of year. However, a recent study concluded that climate change is causing them to form closer to coastlines, intensify more quickly, and last longer after making landfall. This underscores the need to address climate change to mitigate the impact of these natural disasters.
