Following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, attributed to Israel, Iran and its allies are considering a military response, potentially escalating violence in the region.

U.S. Anticipates Iranian Attack on Israel

On Monday, August 12, the United States voiced concerns about potential large-scale attacks by Iran against Israel in the near future. John Kirby, spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, indicated these attacks could happen within the week, with several European nations joining the plea for Tehran to “desist” from these destabilizing actions.

In response, Nasser Kanani, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, stated emphatically that “the Islamic Republic is determined to defend its sovereignty, (…) and does not seek permission to exercise its legitimate rights”.

Mounting Tensions in the Middle East

These statements come amidst rising tensions following two assassinations. Ismaïl Haniyeh, leader of Hamas, was killed on July 31 in Tehran, and Fouad Chokr, a pro-Iranian Hezbollah military commander, was killed the day before near Beirut by an Israeli strike.

Both incidents were attributed to Israel by Tehran and its allies, who now threaten retaliation against Israel.

Global Call for De-escalation

A meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and leaders from four European countries concluded with a joint statement urging Iran to “abandon” its planned attack, highlighting the “serious consequences” for regional security.

Iran’s Response to International Pressure

Following international calls, Massoud Pezeshkian clearly stated that “Iran will never yield to pressure, sanctions, and coercion, but believes it has the right to respond to aggressors in accordance with international norms”.

This tense situation could potentially impact ceasefire talks in Gaza scheduled for the following Thursday.

The Complex Roles of Iraq and Lebanon

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized to the Iraqi Prime Minister the “importance of Iraq’s responsibility to protect the international coalition from attacks by Iran-backed militias.”

In Lebanon, tensions remain high with ongoing exchanges of fire between Hezbollah, allied with Hamas, and the Israeli military along the Israeli-Lebanese border. Meanwhile, Israel continues its offensive in Gaza, where Hamas and its allies appear emboldened.
