U.S. Seeks Explanation from Ukraine After Its Incursion into Russia

On Tuesday, Ukrainian forces entered the Kursk region of Russia, prompting the evacuation of thousands of both Ukrainians and Russians. This escalation raises questions about future tensions.
Ukraine Requested to Explain Actions to the US
The White House announced on Wednesday that it is seeking clarification from Ukraine regarding its ongoing military activities on Russian territory, particularly in the Kursk border region.
White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre stated, “We will be reaching out to the Ukrainian military to understand their objectives”, emphasizing the need for Ukraine’s “common sense” actions in response to Russian assaults.
Washington’s Limited Support for Kiev
In May, the Biden administration approved Kiev’s use of American weaponry to target locations in Russia, especially around the Kharkiv area (northeast), which has been under Russian attack.
However, John Kirby, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, reminded that “nothing has changed” in the US stance against a broad Ukrainian strike into Russia.
Ukrainian Invasion of Russian Kursk Region
Ukrainian forces initiated an operation in Russian territory starting in the Kursk region, prompting the evacuation of thousands from both sides of the border. Hostilities continued into Wednesday.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller critiqued Russia’s labeling of the situation as a “large-scale provocation” by President Vladimir Putin, arguing, “It’s a bit much to call it a provocation given Russia’s violations of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty”.
