U.S. TikTok Ban Sparks Surge in Preloaded Smartphone Sales on eBay

The ban on TikTok has unexpectedly boosted the market for smartphones with the app pre-installed, selling at exorbitant prices and highlighting the significant economic and social effects of this unprecedented digital prohibition.
TikTok Ban Sparks Unprecedented Opportunities
The U.S. smartphone market has recently been stirred by a wave of opportunists selling devices with TikTok pre-installed for sky-high prices, with listings reaching up to $50,000 on platforms like eBay and Facebook Marketplace.
The Reasons Behind This Phenomenon
This surge was triggered by a U.S. law that bans TikTok unless it is sold to a non-Chinese buyer—a decision upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court last week. In the midst of this tension, President Donald Trump issued an order to temporarily suspend the enforcement of this ban until April.
As a result, TikTok has been removed from U.S. app stores such as Google Play and the Apple App Store. Now, only individuals who had previously downloaded the app can continue to use it, leading to a high demand for smartphones that still have the app installed.
Opportunists Capitalize on the Situation
Those who anticipated the ban are now seeing a golden opportunity. “I just expected to sell this phone,” said Nicholas Matthews, a seller from New York who fetched an offer of $4,550 for his iPhone 14 Plus loaded with TikTok.
It remains unclear whether U.S. authorities will tolerate this practice. Similarly, it is uncertain whether a Beijing-based company like ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, will agree to sell its popular social media platform’s U.S. operations.
