U.S. Voters Distrust Candidates Using Generative AI in Campaign Videos

It appears to be a clear accusation against attempts to manipulate voters.
Artificial Intelligence in U.S. Elections
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to play a significant role in the upcoming U.S. elections in November. To combat misinformation, various American states have enacted laws requiring political ads to disclose the use of generative AI.
AI Warnings Trigger Skepticism
A new study by the Center on Technology Policy at New York University, initially reported by The Washington Post, reveals that twenty states now have such regulations. However, these disclaimers may inadvertently cause distrust among voters.
Participants in the study viewed political ads from fictional candidates, some with AI usage warnings and others without. Findings indicated that disclaimers were associated with reduced trust and appeal towards the promoted candidate.
AI Disclaimers Often Overlooked
Additionally, participants noted they were more likely to report or signal ads on social media that included these warnings.
Despite their importance for transparency, around 37% of respondents admitted they did not recall seeing any AI-related language after viewing the ads.
Toward Regulating AI in Political Ads?
Researchers tested two different disclaimers inspired by the disclosure requirements of two separate states. While Michigan’s approach was more common, participants preferred Florida’s more general disclaimer, which applied to any use of AI.
This study emphasizes the need for clear and effective regulation of AI in political advertisements to ensure transparency and maintain voter trust.
