Uber Dives into the Sharing Economy: Rent-a-Developer Service Launched
Uber is expanding its services with Scaled Solutions, a new division focused on data labeling and coding, already collaborating with companies such as Niantic and Aurora Innovations.
Uber Expands into Coding and Data Labeling
According to Bloomberg, transportation giant Uber is venturing into a new field by outsourcing coding and data labeling tasks to independent contractors. Uber, which handles 28 million rides daily, is enhancing its AI capabilities with a state-of-the-art technology platform that supports data labeling, testing, and localization, now open to all users.
Introducing the Scaled Solutions Division
Uber has launched a new division called Scaled Solutions, described as a platform for “independent analysts, testers, and data operators”. Originally an internal team managing “large annotation tasks” for Uber’s other services, Scaled Solutions has expanded to offer coding and data labeling services to external companies.
Notable Partnerships
Scaled Solutions already services prominent clients like Niantic Inc, the creators of Pokémon Go, and Aurora Innovations, a specialist in autonomous truck software. Notably, Aurora acquired Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) in 2020, and Uber is an investor in Aurora.
Global Recruitment Efforts
This month, Uber began recruiting workers for its Scaled Solutions division in several countries, including India, the USA, Canada, Poland, and Nicaragua. The division is also hiring for corporate positions in San Francisco, New York, and Chicago. According to a Bloomberg reviewed onboarding document, the contractors’ pay is distributed monthly based on the tasks completed, although specific rates were not disclosed to Bloomberg.
