UK Probe into Google and Apple’s Mobile Ecosystems

The UK is conducting a detailed investigation into Google and Apple's mobile ecosystems to ensure they comply with current regulations.
Google and Apple Targeted by UK Competition Authority
A challenging day looms for tech giants Google and Apple as they are now under the scrutiny of the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The focus is on their dominant roles within mobile ecosystems, a fresh investigation initiated just a day after a former Amazon executive was named interim chair of the CMA.
Strategic Market Status: A Hot Topic
The CMA is exploring whether Google and Apple’s mobile ecosystems should be designated as Strategic Market Status (SMS), which could lead to stricter regulation and pro-competition guidelines. The specifics of the investigation are still unfolding. This follows the recent enactment of the UK’s Digital Markets, Competition, and Consumers Act (DMCC) on January 1. Google is also facing an earlier SMS inquiry this month targeting potential antitrust practices in its search services.
Range of Reactions and Potential Outcomes
The CMA’s SMS investigations can extend up to nine months. Both cases are currently open for public comment regarding the investigation and potential interventions, with contributions accepted until February 12.
Increasing Pressure in India
Simultaneously, Google and Apple are facing additional challenges in India. According to Bloomberg, the Indian Ministry of Technology is pressuring both corporations to incorporate the state-supported app store, GOV.in, on their platforms. The Indian government is also advocating for these apps to be pre-installed on all mobile devices, accessible for third-party downloads, and not labeled as an “untrustworthy source.” This initiative aims to broaden the distribution of public welfare services.
