The first private space mission was postponed on Tuesday due to a helium leak. What's next for this extraordinary mission?

SpaceX: Delay of the First Private Spacewalk

The inaugural private spacewalk, orchestrated by SpaceX, has been indefinitely postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions. Originally set for August 28, 2024, the Polaris Dawn mission, poised to make historical strides in space exploration, has been rescheduled.

An Ambitious Project Led by a Billionaire

The mission commander is none other than American billionaire Jared Isaacman. A previous collaborator with SpaceX, he has funded this mission to trial new space suits and conduct a private extravehicular activity, planned to be broadcast live on the mission’s third day.

A Crew of Non-Astronauts

In a first for SpaceX, two of its employees will be part of the crew. Sarah Gillis, who trains astronauts, and Anna Menon, a former NASA employee, will join the expedition. They will be accompanied by Scott Poteet, a former U.S. Air Force officer and associate of Jared Isaacman. These four pioneers have undergone “an intensive two-year training”, including centrifuge sessions, scuba diving, parachute jumps, and survival training in Ecuador.

A New Milestone for Commercial Space Exploration

Polaris Dawn represents a significant advance in commercial space exploration. SpaceX’s ambitious agenda includes three missions, with the first crewed flight of the mega-rocket Starship. At a distance of 1,400 km, where space conditions present unique challenges in terms of radiation and micrometeoroids, the mission will test new space technologies. In this context, Isaacman stated: “The goal is to develop and test new technologies and maneuvers to advance SpaceX’s bold vision of enabling humanity to travel among the stars”.
