Unveiling the Controversy Surrounding AI-Generated Starter Packs

Explore the innovative trend of "starter packs," powered by artificial intelligence, currently sparking lively debates. We'll cover everything you need to know.
The Boom of AI “Starter Packs” on Social Media
A new trend is sweeping social media: the “starter pack”. This trend features an AI-generated image that depicts a person along with their signature items as a collectible plastic figurine. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and even LinkedIn have been stormed by this trend, with celebrities including Olivier Faure, Stéphane Bern, and Cristina Cordula showcasing their own versions.
It’s overwhelming on LinkedIn—truly a flood!
A study on Bluesky has shown that individuals featured in these “starter packs” see significant boosts in visibility and engagement. Specifically, these users experience up to 85% more followers and a 70% increase in “Likes” compared to similar members not featured in these packs. Their content creation also jumps by 60%, while they give out 71% more “Likes”. Notably, creators of these “starter packs” also benefit, with a 117% surge in new followers and a doubling in post output.
A Divisive Trend
Despite its rapid success, the “starter pack” trend is not without controversy. Many artists are concerned about AI’s burgeoning role in art. Goro Miyazaki, son of famed Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, has even suggested that AI could one day “replace” creators.
In response, some artists and illustrators have started creating their own “starter packs” without AI, using the hashtag #starterpacknoAI. Comic book author Pénélope Bagieu posted her own “starter pack” with the AI label crossed out.
The Environmental Cost of AI
Beyond artistic concerns, there are environmental worries associated with AI usage. Climate content creator Gaétan Gabriele shared a video explaining that “A billion messages are exchanged daily on ChatGPT, amounting to the electricity consumption of about 27,000 French households.” He warned that AI-related emissions could increase by 60% by 2040.
So, the next time you encounter an AI “starter pack,” remember there’s more than meets the eye. Whether you are for or against this new trend, one thing is clear: the debate over AI’s impact on art and the environment is far from over.
