Unveiling the Mystery: Can Russia’s Formidable Hypersonic Missile Be Countered?

The Russian military's test of a novel hypersonic missile on a Ukrainian weapons factory has heightened tensions between the West and the Kremlin, raising concerns about its impact on international relations.
A Major Escalation in Military Tensions
Amid already high international tensions, the Russian military has taken a significant step by testing a new weapon on the battlefield. A hypersonic missile, named “Orechnik” or “Hazelnut” in Russian, was deployed for the first time during a strike on a Ukrainian armament factory. This new player in the Ukraine war can travel 5,000 km at an astonishing speed, escalating tensions between the West and the Kremlin.
Characteristics of the “Orechnik” Missile
This weapon’s novelty lies in its ability to hit targets between 3,000 and 5,500 km away, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He stated that the launch was a combat condition test, suggesting that the weapon is still under development. The missile, previously unknown until this demonstration, was fired from the Astrakhan region in Russia and struck the Pivdenmach satellite manufacturing plant in Dnipro, Ukraine, approximately 1,000 km away.
Threat Potential
Despite its intermediate range, “Orechnik” could theoretically reach targets on the West Coast of the United States if launched from the Far East of Russia. Additionally, according to Pavel Podvig, a researcher at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, this missile could threaten nearly all of Europe. Putin has emphasized that no current defense system can intercept such weapons.
A Political Demonstration
Experts agree that the use of this missile primarily serves as a political message to the West and Kiev. This is a response to the recent US authorization of long-range missile use on Russian territory. This show of force signifies that Russia is capable of retaliating against any potential attack on its soil.
