Venezuela: Maduro Suspends X for 10 Days

The reelected Venezuelan president, lacking precise vote counts, will appear before the Supreme Court he summoned to validate his victory on Friday, amid opposition claims of possessing proof of electoral fraud.

In a tense Venezuelan atmosphere, President Nicolas Maduro has suspended Platform X (formerly Twitter) for ten days. This action follows his accusations against the social network’s chief, Elon Musk, for “violating all the network’s rules by inciting hatred and fascism”.

Clinging to Power Amidst Controversy

Despite these allegations and a disputed re-election, Maduro appeared before the Supreme Court, which he approached to affirm his continuation in power.

He faces an opposition claiming the election was rigged, with evidence suggesting Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, successor to Maria Corina Machado, actually won with 67% of the vote.

International Pressure

The local turmoil has drawn international attention. Leading nations including Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico have demanded the Venezuelan government release the minutes from the controversial election.

Meanwhile, Washington continues its sanctions against Venezuela, cautioning that “arresting opposition leaders could provoke even greater international mobilization”.

Deadly Consequences

The struggle for power has proven deadly. According to human rights organizations, post-election violence following Maduro’s declaration of victory resulted in 24 deaths. Opposition leaders have not been spared.

Key opposition figures, Williams Davila and Américo De Grazia, were arrested, marking a surge in repression.
