Vodafone is rolling out its "instant emergency network" in the area affected by Storm DANA. How could this technology be a game-changer during natural disasters?

Vodafone’s Technology Aids Flood Victims in Spain

In the flood-stricken areas of the Valencian Community on October 29, Vodafone deployed its Instant Network Emergency Response (INER) technology, enabling hundreds of people to reconnect with family after 72 hours without electricity or mobile coverage.

Innovative Device Serves Populations in Distress

The portable INER system developed by Vodafone fits into a suitcase and provides an independent mobile network with smartphone charging capabilities. For this rescue operation, internet connectivity was secured via SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network. Vodafone equipment was installed in Paiporta, Utiel, and Montroy, identified by the Military Emergency Unit (UME) as among the most affected locales.

They are setting up a temporary emergency network for victims and aid workers in the flood-affected area, utilizing Vodafone’s Instant Network technology.

Emergency Networks Maintain Connections

Vodafone reported that six INER networks were dispatched from Germany on Friday. Each network provides free wifi connectivity for up to 6,000 users within a 600-meter range. Initially, they were set up in town halls, senior social centers, and the Red Cross advanced command post.

Julia Velasco, Vodafone Spain’s Director of Technology and Operations, told elEconomista that the Vodafone Foundation has a team of trained international volunteers ready to deploy in disaster-struck areas to install wifi access points and “Instant Chargers” for multiple devices.

A Proven Emergency Network

The INER system has been deployed in various natural disasters, including floods in Wroclaw (Poland), the eruption of La Palma volcano in the Canary Islands, and disasters in the Philippines, Vanuatu, and Nepal. Since 2011, Vodafone’s emergency network has restored immediate mobile connections in over 25 disaster scenarios.

The deployment of this system is crucial. As Julia Velasco emphasized, many victims had been unable to inform their relatives about their safety. Moreover, the INER network provides immediate connectivity while technical teams work to repair severed optical fibers and damaged mobile towers.
