By 2030, the company aims to have 90 to 100% of its vehicles electrified, including plug-in hybrids. How does it plan to achieve this ambitious goal?

Volvo Scales Back Its Electrification Goals

Swedish automaker Volvo, which announced three years ago its aim to sell only electric vehicles by 2030, is now adjusting its targets. The company now aims for 90 to 100% of its vehicles to be electrified, including plug-in hybrids and mild hybrids, by the end of the decade. Volvo cites “changing market conditions and evolving customer demands” as the reasons for this revision.

Challenges in Electrification

A key factor in this decision is the slower-than-expected rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Despite the 2021 passage of President Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure law, which allocates $7.5 billion to build 500,000 EV charging stations, only seven have been constructed so far. The slow deployment is attributed to state transportation agencies’ lack of experience and various governmental requirements.

“Additional uncertainties” linked to recent taxes on electric vehicles have also impacted Volvo’s decision. This likely refers to losses incurred by the manufacturer, which produces some models in China, following new taxes on Chinese-made electric vehicles and batteries.

Volvo’s Commitment to an Electric Future Remains

Despite these hurdles, Volvo remains committed to electrification. Since its now-abandoned 2030 goal, the company has launched five fully electric models: the EX40, EC40, EX30, EM90, and EX90. Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan reiterates this commitment in a press release: “We are firm in our belief that our future is electric,” he writes, emphasizing that the transition to electrification will not be linear and that adoption rates will vary across customers and markets.
