What’s Luring Mosquitoes to Your Garden?

It's possible that an object in your garden is to blame. Do you have any idea what it might be?
Is Your Garden Lighting Attracting Mosquitoes?
Do you enjoy spending time in your garden but find yourself constantly bothered by mosquitoes? Have you tried everything to get rid of them to no avail? The culprit might be closer than you think. Lighting experts suggest that your garden lights could be drawing these pests to you.
Color Temperature: A Crucial Factor
Jon Saeed, CEO of Lighting Legends, states, “Mosquitoes are more attracted to blue and white lights with a color temperature above 3000K, as these wavelengths mimic those in their natural navigation environment.“
To enjoy mosquito-free summer evenings outdoors, choose garden lights with a warm color temperature ranging from 2200K to 2700K.
The Misleading Signal of Light Heat
It’s not just the light but the heat emitted by it that attracts mosquitoes. “Lights produce heat and mosquitoes can detect this heat from a distance because they are attracted to warm bodies,” explains Saeed.
To minimize their presence, opt for lighting solutions that emit less heat, such as LEDs.
Color: A Natural Repellent
A study by the University of Washington has shown that colors can influence mosquito attraction or repulsion. Dark colors like navy blue, red, orange, and black attract them.
Conversely, light colors such as beige, purple, or light blue tend to repel them. However, this color preference only manifests in the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2), which we exhale during breathing.
In conclusion, if you want a peaceful evening in your garden, consider adjusting the color temperature of your lighting. And if you still face a significant infestation, don’t hesitate to contact a pest control company.
