When AI Becomes an Accomplice to Crime

The rapid advancement of technology is creating opportunities across various forms of crime. It is crucial for law enforcement to enhance their efforts to keep up. What strategies could achieve this?
Criminals Increasingly Turn to AI for Committing Crimes
Alex Murray, the national police chief for AI, warns that criminals are increasingly exploiting Artificial Intelligence (AI) to commit more sophisticated crimes due to the ease of accessing these technologies. The police must “respond quickly” to counter these emerging threats.
Rise in Digital “Burglaries”
Murray expressed concerns about the rise in digital “burglaries.” Fraudsters are using deepfake technology to impersonate corporate executives and deceive colleagues into transferring large sums of money. Several cases have been reported worldwide, with the first of its kind targeting a British energy company in 2019.
AI-Generated Abuse Images
Furthermore, the majority of AI-related crimes involve pedophiles, according to Murray. They use AI to generate images and videos depicting child sexual abuse. This technology is also employed in online sexual exploitation, where criminals threaten to release indecent images of victims unless they receive money or meet other demands.
Multiple Threats
Murray also noted that hackers use AI to detect vulnerabilities in targeted code or software, providing “focus areas” for cyber-attacks. Additionally, he highlighted the risk of seemingly harmless chatbots encouraging individuals to engage in criminal or terrorist activities.
In response, law enforcement must quickly adapt to the challenges posed by this new form of criminality. The increasing sophistication of AI technology and the proliferation of text and image generation software indicate a likely surge in its criminal use.
