Why Does the Soccer Field-Sized Asteroid 2024 YR4 Pose a Threat to Earth?

NASA has announced that asteroid 2024 YR4 has a 1 in 83 chance of hitting Earth soon, potentially triggering a massive tsunami. What could the impacts of such an event be?
Impending Asteroid Threat Detected
NASA has identified an asteroid, named 2024 YR4, which poses a 1 in 83 chance of striking Earth. Scientists warn that its impact could unleash massive tsunamis.
A Celestial Object of Alarming Size
Discovered by the Rio Hurtado Observatory in Chile, this celestial body measures an alarming 40 to 100 meters in diameter, second only to the 320-meter long asteroid Apophis.
Astronomer Jérémie Vaubaillon from the Paris Observatory notes that asteroid 2024 YR4 has “more than a 1% chance of colliding with Earth on December 22, 2032.”
Potential Threat to Earth
The likelihood of 2024 YR4 hitting Earth is considered relatively high, raising concerns among space agencies. As a result, it has been classified at level 3 on the Turin scale, which measures asteroid risk levels.
It has thus become a priority for the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), under the auspices of the United Nations. “It’s not an immediate threat, but it demands close monitoring,” cautions the astronomer.
Impact and Consequences
While the impact of asteroid 2024 YR4 would not spell the end of life on Earth, its repercussions could be regional and cause injuries. A scenario similar to the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor, which injured thousands, is possible. Moreover, if the asteroid were to crash into the Atlantic Ocean, a tsunami with waves several meters high could occur, posing a threat to places like Le Havre in France and New York in the USA.
