iOS 18 enhances iPhone security by introducing an automatic restart after 72 hours of inactivity, making unauthorized data access more challenging and improving user protection.

Enhanced Security with iOS 18

The release of iOS 18 introduced several significant updates, among which an easy-to-overlook security enhancement stands out. Security researchers have observed that iPhones running this new software now feature an additional security measure: an automatic restart after 72 hours of inactivity.

Security First

Security researcher Jiska Classen demonstrated this feature in a time-lapse video. She left an iPhone locked on the beta version of iOS 18.2 for three days. After this period, the device automatically rebooted. Classen highlighted that this is a full reboot, as the lock screen explicitly requests the passcode post-restart.

The “before first unlock” state of the iPhone, which locks the encryption keys inside the Secure Enclave Processor, makes iPhones significantly harder to hack post-reboot. This includes challenges for thieves, law enforcement, or anyone else trying to bypass the lock screen.

A Controversial Feature

Interestingly, this feature has already caused issues for law enforcement. A conspiracy theory among police suggests that iPhones with iOS 18 secretly communicate, triggering spontaneous reboots when other phones disconnect from cellular networks.

However, the truth is simpler. iPhones are simply programmed to restart if they remain inactive for too long, regardless of battery level or signal presence. This feature is hardcoded into the phone itself, independent of any external factors.

Enhanced Security for Users

For the average user, encountering this automatic lock is unlikely if you use your iPhone daily, as the restart countdown will never complete. However, for anyone attempting to access your data illegally, this new feature will make their efforts much more challenging.
