In 2024, the mesmerizing Northern Lights captivated many French people, with an even more spectacular display anticipated in 2025. What other natural wonders will the upcoming year bring?

Northern Lights: A Celestial Spectacle Set for 2025

The Northern Lights left an unforgettable mark on the hearts of the French in 2024. These stunning dancing lights in the night sky, reminiscent of undulating jellyfish, are expected to make a strong return in 2025, experts say.

The Solar Cycle: Key to the Auroras

The Northern Lights phenomenon is tied to a physical reaction caused by the solar wind—a stream of material ejected by the Sun that, upon striking Earth’s atmosphere, creates these colorful lights. Fabrice Mottez, editor-in-chief of Astronomy magazine and researcher at CNRS and the Paris Observatory, explains: “A small portion of this wind enters Earth’s environment, lingers for a few hours, and is then re-emitted towards Earth. It is this displacement that triggers the auroras, thus producing that green light.”

The solar wind is not constant. The Sun follows a cycle of about 22 years, consisting of an ascending phase and a descending phase, each lasting 11 years.

During the ascending phase, the Sun emits more material, thereby increasing the likelihood of Northern Lights appearances. This phase peaks during the solar maximum, which coincides with the period when the Sun emits the most material.

A Delicate but Promising Prediction

As of January 2025, we are nearing the peak of the solar cycle. This indicates that the Sun is in its maximum solar phase, making the sighting of Northern Lights in the coming year highly likely. However, several factors must align for the spectacle to occur, such as the speed of the solar wind and Earth’s orientation.

Precisely predicting the appearance of the Northern Lights is a complex challenge. The light show is often unpredictable, potentially occurring just hours after a solar eruption. But isn’t the beauty of the spectacle worth a few unsuccessful attempts?
