In a shocking operation in Australia, sharpshooters from helicopters were deployed to kill 750 koalas, an iconic species of the continent.

The Tragedy of Marsupials in Australia

Recently, the world was moved by the plight of koalas, those charming marsupials severely affected by wildfires in Australia. In 2022, they were classified as an “endangered” species. Experts believe that without intervention, these iconic creatures could vanish by 2050.

A Controversial Mass Culling

Despite these alarming circumstances, a shocking decision was made last month to cull nearly 750 marsupials. This news, reported by Sky News and noted by Le Parisien, sparked widespread outrage.

Snipers in helicopters were tasked with shooting hundreds of koalas, justified by the critical condition of some animals, “severely injured, dehydrated, or even on the brink of starvation” following the fires that devastated Budj Bim National Park in the west of the country.

Debated Justifications

Jacinta Allan, the Premier of Victoria where the park is located, emphasized that the targeted koalas were in “great distress.”

This rationale was challenged by Jess Robertson, president of the Koala Alliance, who criticized the method, stating: “There is no way to tell if a koala is in poor condition from a helicopter”. She also condemned the lack of effort to check whether the koalas had offspring.

A Repeated History?

This isn’t the first instance of such measures in Australia. In 2023, the government authorized a similar operation to reduce the population of brumbies, wild horses, which are said to pose biodiversity issues due to their increasing numbers. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, pigs and deer have also been culled from the air as part of a management plan.

These incidents raise questions about wildlife management in Australia and the extreme measures taken to address complex ecological issues.
