Wildfires: Multiple Towns Near Athens Evacuated in Greece

Last Saturday, the Greek Minister of Civil Protection declared that due to strong winds, drought, and high temperatures, half of the country faces a significant fire risk until August 15. What measures are being implemented to mitigate this risk?
Athens Engulfed in Epic Battle Against Flames
Since Sunday, Athens has been experiencing a nightmare reminiscent of the epic tales of its ancient gods. A massive fire is threatening the very integrity of the Greek capital, prompting a relentless race against time by emergency services.
Unprecedented Mobilization
A total of 510 firefighters, 152 vehicles, and 29 aircraft have been deployed to tackle the blaze. Despite these monumental efforts, the situation remains dire.
“Despite superhuman efforts, the fire is spreading very quickly toward Penteli,” stated Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, a firefighter spokesperson during a press conference.

Mass Evacuations
Concurrently, authorities have issued multiple evacuation orders. Eight villages, including Marathon with 7,000 residents, have been cleared.
Five other areas in the northeastern suburbs of the capital and two hospitals have also been evacuated. Thousands of displaced individuals have been sheltered at the OAKA Olympic Stadium, now serving as an emergency refuge.
Greece: A Climate Victim
This disaster comes amid a particularly tense backdrop. Following a dry winter, Greece is now grappling with temperatures exceeding 39°C and winds over 50 km/h.
The entire region around Athens continues to face a constant threat. Fire risk alerts are high throughout half of the country, adding yet another challenge for the Greek nation.
