X’s “Community Notes” Feature Fails Its Sole Mission

The Digital Hate Control Center and the Washington Post have released damning reports highlighting the ineffectiveness of X's misinformation prevention system.
Spread of Misinformation on Platform X
Since Elon Musk’s takeover, Platform X has seen a significant rise in misinformation, as noted by recent reports from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) and the Washington Post. The investigations indicate that Musk’s control measures are insufficient to stem the tide of false information.
Alarming Results from X’s Community Notes System
The CCDH investigated X’s “Community Notes” feature, a user-driven system for tagging and correcting misleading posts. Out of 283 election-related posts marked as misleading, 209 remained uncorrected, visible to all X users, amassing a total of 2.2 billion views—an alarming figure.
The Washington Post Confirms X’s Issues
The Washington Post conducted its own investigation, affirming CCDH’s findings. It highlighted an account named “End Wokeness” which spread an unverified claim by former President Donald Trump about Haitian immigrants. Despite user reports, the post remained uncorrected for four days.
Criticism of Musk’s Management
Elon Musk himself is frequently targeted by “Community Notes” for posting false or misleading content. A notable example is a manipulated video of Kamala Harris, which garnered 136.6 million views without any correction. The CCDH, which regularly monitors Musk’s posts, sharply criticizes the management of misinformation on X. According to its CEO, Imran Ahmed, X “utterly fails to contain the kind of algorithm-boosted incitement that can lead to real-world violence.” Both reports underscore the urgent need for more effective measures to combat misinformation on X.
